Carnegie Mellon Discovers The Roots Apr 18, 2008 2:47 pm | by Felix Park
On the College of Fine Arts lawn, influential hip-hop band The Roots performed energetically to a huge audience of Carnegie Mellon University and other Pittsburgh college students, from 8 to 11 PM. Known for their jazzy sound and live instrumentation, The Roots gave a performance that did not fail to impress. With a diverse string of song selections from their new album and their past works(which featured the display of their masterful skill at keyboard, guitar, bass, and the big-crowd pleaser, sousaphone), they also launched into an unforgettable medley of popular rap and hip hop songs spanning from the eighties onward, and an amazing rendition of Bob Dylan's “Masters of War,” with a delicious offering of many, many extended solos, all equally intense and frenzied. With the huge turnout of people, the quality of the music, and the great if not a bit chilly Spring night, The Roots have left an impression that Carnegie Mellon students – and the lawn – will not soon forget.
